Is Diarreha A Secondary Symptom To Canine Leukemia?

I have a 6 year old Pug who suddenly got a case of chronic diarreha, lost 5 pounds, and has an extremely elevated white blood cell count. My vet suspects canine leukemia, yet cannot get the diarreha under control. I would appreciate ANY input. Thanks.

That is a possibility but there are many potential causes of diarrhea especially with a dog with an elevated white count and diarrhea is not the most common or significant sign for dogs with leukemia. Some type of infection would be on top of the list as well for potential causes. The best way to diagnose leukemia would to have your veterinarian perform a bone marrow aspirate. Your veterinarian would use the results of the aspirate along with other lab work results to give a more accurate diagnosis. In the meanwhile other diagnostics will be needed to find out other potential causes of chronic diarrhea. Another common cause of chronic diarrhea is a condition called inflammatory bowel disease. But many other disease processes can also contribute to your dog’s diarrhea as well such as liver disease, endocrine disease etc.

Yes it can be. However, I am more inclined to think that the pug has an intestinal tract infection. This is VERY common in Pugs. I suggest putting the Pug on 2 weeks worth of Amoxicillin. You should see improvement within 48 hours.

listen to your vet. whatever he says is right. he went to school for that ****. its better than coming on here and getting answers from people who may or may not be educated on the subject.
